Blog Updated – Family Updates – News

Tammy and I have been hard at work on this site bringing it up to where we like it again. In this post, I touch on the blog update, what I’ve been up to, and at the end, some great news you’ll want to read, for sure!

First, we have also upgraded to WordPress 3.0 Thelonious and switched to the default WordPress 3.0 “twenty ten” theme. We customized it a little bit with a new header (non-rotating) and cleaned out a lot of old plugins and junk. You’ll probably notice the site loads and operates a lot faster now.

Second, we opted to keep Menalto’s Gallery for our photos. This choice was easy after considering our options. The main thing that kept us with Gallery2 is the fact that Gallery 3 is close to release and we won’t have to reupload all of our images to some new gallery system. That saves us from trying to add captions to over 5 years worth of photos on here (2,200+ photos).

Because we kept Gallery2, I went ahead and upgraded to the latest 2.3.1 so that we’ll be ready to upgrade to Gallery 3.0 in the near future. I even showed Tammy how I upgrade the software on this site. First time she’s shown a little interest in that, pretty cool!

Third, I removed the WPG2 plugin that allowed integration from WordPress to Gallery2. This plugin was a HUGE pain in the neck and forced us to stay with the same theme for all these years. You’ll notice if you visit our Buehler Family Photo Gallery that it no longer has the same theme as the main site, I’m keeping it this way so that we can change our main page theme to fit the times. If it is nearing Christmas, we can switch to a Christmas style and get all festive-like for you.

Fourth, all of the old posts were updated to show bigger thumbnails. Since we were forced to update all posts that had images, due to the removal of the WPG2 plugin, we went ahead and made the thumbnails on the posts much bigger. We are now uploading images to posts directly using WordPress’ built in upload/embedding features. This will make switching themes a SNAP. I also removed a lot of old news, outdated information, and irrelevant stuff from here.

Fifth, Tammy is now working on the blog again! She is going through all of our photos from last year to now and preparing them for upload and viewing. Once she is done updating the Photo Gallery, she’ll begin working on adding posts with all of the things we’ve done since the last family update! Many of you have requested new blog updates and now, they are a-commin’!

Sixth, I’ve done a lot of work on this site and during these updates, I accidentally fired off a few misfires from our email notification system. I’m sorry about that. This system is buggy with WordPress 3.0. I emailed the developer to try and join their beta release program to fix it. But from now on, you should see quite a few emails from us with updates over the last year.

Seventh, this all started because I needed a “break” from all the work I’ve been doing. I’ve spent the last two months coding my own website template for Customer Hosting Reviews and then working with a developer to upgrade the site to use the new theme with all of the new features I wanted (quite expensive). I’ve also been working with two content writers to add all new content to the site, the content isn’t perfect, but it works for what I needed. Also, managed to get a Google Streetview type site up that was inspired by Uncle Chuck’s vpike called House Street Views. I have several domains I want to launch with this that goes into niche topics that need street view maps.

And finally, #8 of this long blog update, it hasn’t been posted on here yet but I think we’ve told everyone already, Tammy is pregnant! We’re expecting our new baby sometime around Thanksgiving and we can’t wait! We have yet to buy any baby items, we need a crib, crib set, stroller, car seat, baby clothes, a take home clothing set, and of course, we won’t qualify for any assistance, so we’ll need to stock up on formula, baby diapers, etc. We’ll also need to cover $5,000 that our insurance won’t pay. Nonetheless, this is why I’ve been busting my ass working so hard to try and earn more money to help cover all of this. Top this off with yet another health insurance premium increase letter, it’s all piling up. But I’m keeping up a positive attitude, working hard, and feel great with all that I have accomplished.

Thanks for reading. We love reading blog comments on here, so if you read our new blog updates coming soon, please be sure to comment. We’d sure appreciate it!

May – June 7th, 2009 – Baby, Mother’s Day, Birthday, etc.

May 6th, I had my first prenatal appointment with Laurie Hanson.  She’s a certified nurse midwife who has gotten really good reviews on websites.  I had a great experience with my last midwife when I had Cole, so I went with the only midwife that is in the southern Utah area.  The best part of the appointment was when we heard the baby’s heartbeat!  Scott and I were so excited! It’s really true, we’re going to have a baby!!!   Now we can tell family, yay!!

All of us on the day before Mother's Day

May 9th was Mother’s Day, and this was the day we decided to tell Scott’s mom that I was pregnant. We were pleasantly surprised when Scott’s sister and brother also came up, as they would all find out too. I made a Mother’s day card for Scott’s mom, that announced the news. We hadn’t told the kids yet, so I had them read and sign the mother’s day card for grandma. Brittany read the outside and then read the inside…and Scott and I just waited…and waited for the light bulb to click on…and then it did. She looked at us, and said, “Wait, who’s pregnant?” We just laughed and said I was. Both the kids were sooo happy! They have been hinting at wanting another sibling but I don’t think they ever expected it to come true. Scott’s mom was so excited when she read the card, and the card quickly got passed along to all the other family members.

Brittany's last concert

May 12th, Brittany played in her last band concert.  She’s decided that she just didn’t like clarinet very much, and wanted to take other classes, that she wouldn’t be able to take if she took band again next year.  While Scott was most disappointed, mostly because of the cost of the instrument, he relented when one of the classes she wanted to take was a web designing class!  That’s right up his alley, and thinks she will do well in it, as she is already playing with her own website as it is.

Star Wars: In Concert

On May 29th, we headed down to Vegas for Star Wars: In Concert. It was only going to be there that one night, so I really wanted to go, as that was the closest place it was going to be to us. Star Wars: In Concert features music from all six of John Williams’ epic Star Wars scores, and narrated live by Anthony Daniels (the actor who portrayed C-3PO in all six films). The production features a full symphony orchestra and choir, accompanied by specially edited footage from the films displayed on a three-story-tall, high-definition LED super-screen — one of the largest ever put on tour. The live music and film elements are synchronized in order to create a full multi-media, one-of-kind Star Wars experience. It was an absolutely amazing show!! Cole was very excited to go, and Brittany was prepared to be bored, as she isn’t a huge Star Wars fan, but she said that the show was way better than she expected!! I’m so glad we were able to make it to the concert!

Birthday Presents

June 7th, I can’t believe our son is now 8!  For his birthday, he had two requests.  One, he wanted to go to Pirate Island Pizza.  He just loves playing the arcade games there, and then turning the tickets in for prizes.  We got some pizza, played the games, and then went home for dessert.  His second request was for a chocolate cake, with chocolate frosting, and chocolate sprinkles.  A boy after my own heart!  Death by Chocolate!   After dessert, we opened presents, and he had fun with a present from Grandma Katie.  She got him some new shorts, and pants, but hid fun things in the pockets, like dollar bills, and rocks!  He had fun going through all the pockets to see what he’d find.  His other favorite present was the Nerf Ball Launcher.  I think he only wanted this to fire balls at his sister, but ya never know!  More pictures from Cole’s Birthday!

March & April, 2010 – Birthday, Easter & Other Stuff

New Teen Bedding

Brittany had her 12th birthday in March, and all of a sudden thinks she’s a teenager.  I keep telling her that THIRTEEN is a teenager.  She just looks at me like I’m the stupid one.  She’s got that tween attitude going on for sure.  She had a nice quiet family birthday at home, and we decided to get her a new bed set with matching curtains for her birthday.  Something a little more “teenagerish”..so we got her stripes and polka dots, that can be mix-matched in all sorts of styles, depending on her mood..which changes often! :)
More Birthday pictures here!

March 24th, I took a home pregnancy test.  It came out positive, and while Scott and I are super excited, we didn’t dare tell anyone yet, just in case, the results are wrong, or something else weird.  We decided to wait a while, before going to the doctor to have them confirm.

SUU Science Fair

March 26th was the SUU Science Fair.  Brittany and a friend participated in it with a team project.  They didn’t win any awards this year, but they had fun attending all the activities that SUU puts on during the Science Fair.

April 1st, we got more snow!  Cole was especially devastated as he thought the Easter Bunny wasn’t going to be able to come and hide eggs in 3 days with snow on the ground.  He even went out to shovel, so that the Easter Bunny would have a path to the backyard!

Cole shoveling 3 days before Easter so that the Easter Bunny can come and hide eggs!

April 4th, well, guess what?  The Easter Bunny made it to our house.  Thanks to some sun and Cole’s shoveling, there were eggs all over the backyard for them to find this year.  He looks forward to the Egg Hunt each year, and there was no way some snow was going to thwart his fun!  I decided to do something different this year for hiding their Easter baskets.  Instead of the golden egg holding the 1 clue of where the basket was hidden, I decided to make it 10 different clues.  So once they found the 1st clue, that led them to the 2nd clue, which led them to the 3rd, etc.  Cole had so much fun finding his eggs inside the house that led to the basket.  Brittany wasn’t too thrilled with having to find 10 clues inside the house, but she persevered!  It was so much fun watching the kids running around the house trying to find their next clue, that I totally missed taking pictures of them and their baskets!

We had a wonderful Easter dinner with Scott’s mom, step-dad, our niece and nephew.  I made a cute Easter bunny bread this year, that I thought was too cute to eat, but everyone else just tore into him, eating eyes, and cheeks, and just mangling him!  I must confess, he really did taste good! :x    See more Easter pictures!

Isn't he just too cute to eat??

April 23rd, Cole performed in his play, MacBeth.  We had been hearing about it for months, and his part in the play, and him reciting his part over and over again, and finally the day had arrived for him to perform.  He did superb.  No pictures, because I took it all on video, but he was able to be heard, and spoke his lines slowly so he could be understand, something we worked with him for weeks on!

April 30th was Brittany’s last dress-up day at school.  6th grade had been all about dressing up in different periods of history, which has been a lot of fun for the kids, not so fun for mom.  Each period required the parents helping to make a costume, and buying materials for the costume.  We had 3 costumes to make, Egyptian, Greek and Shakespearean.  We made the Egyptian, and Greek, but I gave up on Shakespearean and just bought a Juliet costume that she can wear for Halloween this year.

Dear Family – I’m Healthy!

Hey guys n gals!

I’m not totally sure why but I have a hard time blogging these days! It’s so much easier on facebook with my quick status updates. Are you friends with me? Make sure you are, I update there all of the time! http://www.facebook.com/ScottDaMan
Just remember to block farmville if you don’t play that game, I have a lot of those posts on my wall. I’m addicted to that damn game!

Anyway, what I wanted to post today is all about my health. It’s been the focus of ALL of my attention (other than maybe farmville on facebook, LOL) for the last 5 months now. When I meet up with people I haven’t seen in a while, it’s nice to see them do a double take! Seeing Gary recently has only inspired me to keep going, their entire family had nothing but kind words to say. Gary was most impressed at how well I’ve done. Of course, meeting the family in Mesquite for Aunt Peggy’s birthday was even more motivation to keep going strong.

In September I saw an infomercial for Beachbody’s P90X system. It’s the first infomercial that I felt wasn’t a scam. The people on there have busted their asses and worked hard and got great results. It triggered me to go downstairs to the office and search more, and more, and more! I looked at people on youtube and ordinary people were RAVING about the system.

At the time, I wanted to start doing something after seeing a picture Tammy took of me at the river last year in a life vest. I looked like a damned booey! I was disgusted. I wanted to change but wasn’t quite sure how, I’ve tried many diets that have all failed. After doing all of the research, I knew P90X was my answer. Hard work, no miracle pills, no fads, just hard work, exercise and a complete overhaul of my diet.

The downfall, I was 278 pounds, around 80 pounds overweight, and was in no shape to pass their “fit test” for P90X. I found out they released a system about ten years back called “Power 90″ and many people recommended it to start with. So, I went for it and brought Tammy along for the ride. We’ve been our own  motivation the entire time. Some days I felt like skipping out and she got me up and going and other days, the opposite. A great support system!

Here’s some basic stats for everyone:

Every 30 days Tammy and I took pictures to see our own progress.
09/19/2009 – 278 pounds – Start of Beachbody’s Power 90 program (2 pounds from morbid obesity)
10/14/2009 – 266 pounds – 30 Days of Power 90 Completed
11/16/2009 – 252 pounds – 60 Days of Power 90 Completed
12/17/2009 – 243 pounds – 90 Days of Power 90 Completed – We graduated Power 90!
(We added a few days of workouts here and took an entire week off for Christmas)
12/28/2009 – Start of Beachbody’s P90X system as seen on TV infomercials
01/10/2010 – 239 pounds – No longer obese by BMI (no pics)
01/26/2010 – 234 pounds – 30 Days of P90X completed
02/17/2010 – 228 pounds – 51 Days  of P90X completed (no pics)

50 POUNDS LOST AS OF YESTERDAY!!!

I had to share this occasion with the world. My goal is still to get below 200 with muscle. Then I’ll go and get my loose-fitting wedding ring adjusted. Under 200 pounds is my “normal weight” by BMI standard that doesn’t consider athletic build in its formula. I *still* want to get below 200 just to say I’m 190 something. Oh yes!! Heck, I’m only 28 pounds away!

Of course, the bad part, I’ve been so focused on my health and well being that I’ve put my business on the back burner. The downside of course, we’re broke but happy. LOL. I need to start working after my birthday tomorrow. Hopefully I can get back into working mode. Maybe we can get back out of debt and pay off our huge dental bills too.

Either way, I finish by saying this: Losing 50 pounds 2 days before my birthday is the best birthday present I could ever ask for. Thanks for reading!

November & December 2009 – New Moon & Christmas

November 19th – New Moon Party

Food at the New Moon Party

My co-worker, Trecia, put on a New Moon party at her house on the night that New Moon was showing in the theatres at midnight.  She put so much work into decorating her house, preparing cute sayings for the food, and making goodie bags for us all.  She even found a local neighbor that had a truck similar to Bella’s in the movie, and got permission for us to all have our picture taken with the truck!  That was a fun trick trying to get us all in the picture!  I had to work that night, but was able to go to the party before work, and then meet up with everyone at the theatre for the midnight showing.  It was so much fun, but I felt slightly guilty that I didn’t have to wait in line, in the cold, like everyone else!

Volturi Castle at the movie theatre

At the theatre, it was all decorated with New Moon themed props.  We had fun taking pictures at the theatre, and then watching the movie all as a group.  A day later, I went back and took Brittany to see the movie with me.  More New Moon pictures!

December 10th – Children’s Christmas Festival

Kids at the North Pole

I was working the day of the Storybook Cavalcade Christmas Parade.  It takes place on Main Street each year and is a part of the American Children’s Christmas Festival. The parade includes floats, walking characters, large balloons, marching bands, cars and more.  Scott took the kids to the parade, and to the Festival of Trees afterward.  I really like seeing all the Christmas trees decorated by theme.  These trees can then be purchased by silent auction, if so desired.  The kids always like to visit the North Pole, where it is decorated so cute, each year.  Santa is also in the North Pole, but both the kids have grown past that stage of seeing Santa.  More pictures from the Children’s Festival here!

December 25th – Christmas

We got a Wii!

We had Scott’s mom and Pete over for Christmas morning.  We had our traditional Spanish breakfast with tamales, before opening presents.  The kids’ big present this year was the Wii.  They were so excited!  They got some games and accessories to go with it.

Scott enticed Mom to try out the Wii, and it was so funny!  They tried all the sports games and we just had a blast listening and watching them.  Scott and his mom are so competitive with each other!  Pete and I were laughing so hard!    More Christmas Pictures!

Windows 7 SATA Hard Drive Not Showing

Today, I noticed my first problem with Windows 7. A weird bug.

This evening I added a new SATA 640GB hard drive to Tammy’s new Dell SX8000 (commonly known as XPS 8000 ) machine and the drive appeared fine in BIOS.

However, when I booted into Windows 7, the normal process of formatting the drive wasn’t working. That is, going into Computer Management then Disk Management. Usually, the unpartitioned drive will appear here. It didn’t! After several reboots, complete shutdowns, nothing worked.

So, taking the advice of others who suggested using a Linux CD to partition the drive, I instead used a Windows 7 setup CD and booted from that. From there I went ahead and partitioned and formatted the drive without issue.

Great! Well, I thought. I booted back into Windows 7 exiting Windows 7 setup CD and discovered the drive still would not appear. Ugh. So the troubleshooting began.

The answer:

Start -> Right Click Computer -> Properties
Device Manager (on left side)
Click the Disk Drives arrow to show the list
Find Your Drive You Installed Here
Right Click on the Drive -> Uninstall
After the SATA HDD disappears, click the Action menu -> Scan For Hardware Changes

This will rescan your system and reinstall your SATA HDD drivers.

After I did this, the formatted drive letters appeared for me under “Computer” because I had already partitioned and formatted the drive in the Windows 7 setup CD. For most others, you’ll just need to go back into Disk Management where you SHOULD discover the drive now where you can partition and setup the drive like normal.

Let me know if this helps.

September & October 2009 – Football, School and Halloween

School started the end of August, and the kids were excited to go back and see their friends again, and meet new teachers.  Brittany started Middle School this year, and would be switching classes, so she was nervous, but excited for that new part of her school life. She will playing clarinet this year in band.  Cole starts 2nd grade, and is excited to make new friends.

Tammy and the kids in New England Patriots shirts

Football is starting again, so Scott and I are excited to be watching games again.  Last time I was in New Hampshire, I got the kids some replica New England Patriots jerseys so we could all match for football season.  The kids also got their new fall school pictures that can be seen in this album.

Kids and fall colors

On October 18th, we decided to go on a hike to see some fall colors.  We had never done the Kanarra Falls hike, so we thought we’d give it a try, just wanting to make it to the first waterfall.  Well, we didn’t make it.  The trail was a bit confusing, and not really well-defined, as we kept crossing the creek.  We thought we were going the wrong way, especially once we got to the part, where it was just nothing but a straight up climb over rocks, or walking through the water.

We decided to turn around at that point, certain we had lost the trail somewhere along the way.  After getting back to work, I talked with some students who have done the trail, and lo and behold, we were supposed to walk through the water, and the first falls are right beyond that!  So, now we have to go back on this hike, someday, and continue on!  On our way back, Scott found a hairy friend crossing our path!  More Kanarra Falls pictures.

Our hairy friend

Brittany had her first official band concert, playing clarinet.  Because she took summer band, she was put with the advanced 6th grade band that played with the 7th and 8th graders, so that was pretty cool for her.

Brittany in her band uniform

For Halloween this year, Cole decided to be a Star Wars Clone Trooper, while Brittany was a Skull Pirate.  We went to Hallelujah Night again sponsored by a local church, where the kids can play games for candy.  They really like going to that event each year.

Colds and Flu – Peroxide Treatment

Dear all friends, family, and anonymous viewers out there,

I want you to try something next time you feel the early signs of a cold or flu.

Using a dropper, fill your ear canals, one at a time for a 10 minutes each side, with Hydrogen Peroxide. It isn’t a pleasant filling, the bubbling feels funny, but I’ve done a trial run and it has worked to kill off my colds symptoms twice now.

Doctors have done research on this and found that humans catch the cold or flu and spread it through their bodies via the ear canals. Everyone thinks you catch them through the eyes, nose, and mouth, but it may not be the case. Think about it, your ear canal is warm, moist, and the perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.

Every time I tell people about this, they look at me with skeptic eyes. But all of my research finds more and more people having excellent results doing it.

Give it a try, just for the sake of giving me results, and leave a comment on this post. I want to see how it works for others.

I don’t want you to go at this blind, I’m providing several resources below. I WISH people would spread this around, you know the government won’t, the pharma companies won’t, the doctor’s won’t. When it comes to the mighty dollar, they won’t tell you about the easy $1 cure.

Instead, they want you to take the flu shots which are KNOWN to have MERCURY, ALUMINUM, and FORMALDEYDE.  Too much MERCURY in combination with the other two is becomming linked to  Alzheimer’s disease  and autoimmune issues. Do your research:

There is some evidence that flu shots cause Alzheimer’s disease. This most likely is a result of combining mercury with aluminum and formaldehyde, which renders them much more toxic together through a synergistic effect than each would be alone. One investigator has reported that people who received the flu vaccine each year for 3 to 5 years had a ten-fold greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who did not have any flu shots (Int J Clin Invest 2005;1:1–4). Source Link

Anyway, about Hydrogen Peroxide in the ear, I’m providing some reading resources below. Educate yourself and like I said, report back.

Forum – Does It Really Work?

Hydogen Peroxide in the ears for flu and cold remedy?

Hydrogen Peroxide Kills Bacteria

Hydrogen Peroxide Cure – Common in Germany and India!

Can Hydrogen Peroxide Prevent the Flu? Check out the quote below:

How many pandemics have been predicted in the last ten years? There was bird flu, SARS and now swine flu. How many never made it beyond sensationalist headlines? Why do they keep popping up? The latest estimate I read was, there’s more than four billion dollars in pure profit to be made on swine flu vaccine and injections. Has anyone else noticed that it’s not human suffering that’s front and center, but lost time and profits that are used as the benchmark?

Is there more to contracting colds and flu than keeping your hands away from your eyes, mouth and nose. An ongoing strong immune system and frequently washing the hands are good places to start. There’s also a lot of research indicating the inner ear is where viruses, flu and colds have the easiest access to the inner workings of the human body.

There are SO MANY RESOURCES out there saying the same thing over and over. Use a search engine, type hydrogen peroxide cure or hydrogen peroxide flu and you’ll see what I mean.

Remember, leave me comments. I want to know your results.
